Dzień Dobry!
I am Mariam, and I just returned from Poland where I was selected to do my long-term ESC volunteering project. I developed a thirst for exploring the world around me from a young age, when the roads took me the USA, as an exchange student, and after that experience and after getting my Bacherlor’s and Master’s degrees, I decided to apply for this project as I believed it would be a life-changing one.
Within the framework of this program, I volunteered at the Democratic School of Wolno-Mi in a charming city, Gliwice. I assisted the teachers and students in various activities, including event organization and excursions. I have actively contributed to cultural exchange and educational activities for the school community. Beyond the classroom, I made videos and blog posts for my host organization’s social media platforms, capturing key moments of my volunteering journey. While some of these tasks were a little more challenging than others, I successfully handled the tasks in front of me. Through this experience, I got to gain new skills, try new methods of teaching, learn a new language, and make life-long connections. And of course, let’s not forget about all the trips, funny, sometimes awkward situations I found myself in, the jokes, the laughs, the tears, the good-byes…
Overall, I would evaluate the project as a success. I was given a chance to make a positive impact while also learning from the people around me. The activities I carried out were fulfilling, and I enjoyed the creative freedom of bringing new ideas to my work. I grew as a mentor, a traveler, and a global citizen. I learned that goodbyes aren’t about endings but about cherishing the time we had. And though I left Poland, a piece of my heart will always stay there. And one day, I know I’ll be back—to walk those familiar streets, to see my colleagues and students again, and to reconnect with the people who made this journey unforgettable.
Through my own experience, I know how important such programs are for the youth, and I’ll keep encouraging people to apply and experience this at least once.
